PRESS RELEASE
Belgrade, 3 June 2017 – On the occasion of the 95th anniversary of the “Belgrade – Red Star” Rowing Club, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Alexander officially launched the new eight oared boat that bears the name of his grandmother, HM Queen Maria, the first patron of the club and great Serbian benefactor.
The celebration was attended by Mr. Dusan Kovacevic, the director of the rowing club “Belgrade – Red Star” Rowing Club, club members and numerous athletes, as well as the members of the Crown Council.
“It is nice to be with you today at the celebration of the “Belgrade – Red Star” Rowing Club. I am proud that your best boat will bear the name of my grandmother, Queen Maria. The relationship between Karadjordjevic family and “Red Star” rowing club is strong and it will always be strong. I congratulate you on your anniversary, and I wish you good luck”, said Crown Prince Alexander.
“Belgrade – Red Star” Rowing Club was founded in 1922 as a rowing club “Belgrade”, and in 1945 it changed the name and became one of the five founders of the sports association “Red Star”. When Princess Maria came to Serbia to be married to King Alexander, she approached Belgrade by boat and was greeted by the rowers of the “Belgrade” rowing club. Queen Maria became the patron of the club and this tradition after many years has been continued by her grandson Crown Prince Alexander.
